Laser Treatments to Eliminate Varicose Veins at Michigan Heart Group

Michigan Heart Group is offering a new treatment for varicose veins that requires only local anesthetic and can be performed at our office in about an hour. It is called endovenous laser therapy (EVLTZ^®), the treatment is a non-surgical alternative to vein stripping. It uses targeted laser energy to seal the vein shut.

Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins stop working, allowing blood to pool in the vein forcing the walls to enlarge and bulge. This causes the rope-like cords that usually appear on the upper part of the legs. Some 40 percent of women and 25 percent of men have varicose veins.

During the EVLT procedure, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the varicose vein through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee. As the fiber is withdrawn, targeted laser energy damages the vein walls, shrinking them and closing the faulty vein so that blood cannot flow through it.

EVLT has been shown to be more effective and less traumatic than vein stripping, which involves removing the vein surgically and usually requires several weeks convalescence. EVLT can also be used to help patients with leg swelling, restless legs and ulcers caused by certain venous disorders.

The procedure has a 98 percent success rate and a much lower risk of complications. Although there may be minor soreness and bruising, any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers as necessary.
